I remember how the children of Israel grumbled and complained about their conditions after they had left Egypt. They wanted to go back for the fish, melons, leeks, and the garlic. Something a little more savory than the manna they were forced to eat in the wilderness. Numbers 11:5
Today, we would say how foolish they were. We have the benefit of hindsight and the understanding that the manna is the true bread of life, the Messiah, Himself. A bread that can sustain not only physical life, but satisfies the deep spiritual hungers that we have as well. John 6:32-35
I believe we can be just as foolish today as they were then. Our "leaks and garlic" are the things we have filled our lives with that can distract us from ever venturing forth to collect the manna as it lays bounteously upon the land. Just stuff. And things. Time consumers. A man once told me that "if you own it, you've got to maintain it". I sometimes wonder who owns what, or what owns who?
My wife was once in need of my assistance, but not wanting to alarm our younger daughter, who was already upset, she tried to get my attention calmly. I responded, "Wait a minute!" I didn't understand the situation from where I was. Later she made the comment: "Why didn't you come right away when I called you, what would you do if the house were on fire?" I had not heard a sense of urgency in her voice at the time, and being in the middle of something that I wanted to finish, I delayed action in a situation where I was needed.
I am reminded that the Lord tries to get our attention with a still, small voice. It is not always thundering from the mountain top. If we say "wait a minute" to Him now, what are we going to do when the house is on fire? I want you to know that the house is on fire. It's burning down all around us. The entire world is burning. And we're busy maintaining our stuff and finishing tasks that seem so important to us.
In Matthew, Chapter 5 Jesus speaks of plucking out the right eye and cutting off the right hand if they offend. The eye, represents all that we seek with our senses. He compared the eye to being adulterous. The worst example of disobedience. It represents the desires of the flesh. We may say that we are unaware of many of them, because they are subtle. But we can recognize them, by the fact that they are very high maintenance. The right hand is an illustration of the things we strive for or desire to obtain. It also can represent the earthly desires of the heart. We can try to suppress them or ignore them, but they are there. And they are calling to us as well. They want to consume our time and our energies. The wise man says "no!". The wise man is the one who finds nourishment in the manna, and leaves the fish, melons, leeks, and the garlic to rot back in Egypt.
The question is, can you leave it all behind? Can you "Exodus" even for a moment? Why do we all too often respond with, "wait a minute, I'm in the middle of something"? It's just stuff. Let it go. The house is burning and you need to get out now. Let the time consumers and the things that distract us from the true manna burn in the fire. Leave Egypt. Get out of slavery and remember that true, spiritual exodus is being able to respond quickly to the voice of God and to those around us who have an urgent need.
